Discover a multitude of spring migrants along the southern shore of Lake Erie at beautiful Presque Isle State Park in Erie, Pennsylvania, where more than 320 species of birds have been recorded, including desirable warblers and other songbirds. It is also home to many owl, woodpecker, and heron species. It contains Gull Point, a sand plain sanctuary that hosts migrant shorebirds and terns. Presque Isle is an Important Bird Area and is nicely located on a major migration corridor. Anything could show up!
The 2023 festival features field trips to all the hotspots and workshops for every level, from Birding 101 to Native Plants for Backyard Birds. Our Keynote this year is David Lindo, also known as The Urban Birder, who is a broadcaster, writer, speaker, educatorm, and bird tour leader. His mission is to engage city folk around the world with the environment through the medium of birds. Every full-weekend registrant will receive a copy of his book, How to Be an Urban Birder. His presentation—A World of Urban Birds—will take us around the urban world in 30 birds.
Also- good food, great camaraderie, a welcome reception on Friday evening with music and fun; lots of friendly helpful people and a small ticket auction, to boot. You may take home something special.
We are a small festival, limited to 150 attendees with no crowds but desirable migrant species. All skill levels are welcome.

Keynote Speaker
David Lindo is The Urban Birder - broadcaster, writer, speaker, educator and bird tour leader. His mission is to engage city folk around the world with the environment through the medium of birds. He has written countless articles on urban birds, urban conservation and wildlife in general for many websites, publications and magazines and has written the Forwards to several books. He is a regular television and radio presenter and has been featured on the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 in the UK as well as other TV and radio channels around the world including CBS in the United States. David was recently named as the 7th most influential person in wildlife by BBC Wildlife Magazine and in 2020 was shortlisted for the Professional Publishers Association (PPA) Columnist of the Year Award. He sat as a judge for the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2021 and Bird Photographer of the Year 2021. He is a Fellow of the International League of Conservation Writers and a member of the British Travel Writers Guild. He is the Founder of the Tower 42 Bird Study Group and Britain’s Vote National Bird Campaign in 2015 that resulted in over 226,000 votes. He was awarded the prestigious HH Bloomer Award in 2021 by the Linnean Society of London and has a play based on his life as The Urban Birder currently being staged by Wroclaw Contemporary Theatre, Poland. David is the author of The Urban Birder (Bloomsbury) 2011, Tales From Concrete Jungles (Bloomsbury) 2015, #Urban Birding (Kosmos) 2018, How To Be An Urban Birder (Princeton/WildGuides) 2018, and The Extraordinary World of Birds (DK) 2022. The mission of the Tom Ridge Environmental Center Foundation is to forge a partnership between the private sector and the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center (TREC) and Presque Isle in order to enhance educational programming, research, and visitor experience at the highest level.

What to Bring:
*You are advised to bring boots to the festival since we may have very wet and muddy trails. Be sure to bring comfortable shoes or boots for walking and any birding gear you desire. The average high temperature in Erie in May is 56 and temperatures at Presque Isle are often lower than on the mainland. Be prepared for cold & rainy weather. Presque Isle is home to deer ticks so you may want to bring insect repellent and plan to tuck your pants into your socks when using the trails on the park. |
