Waterbird Count for November

12/16/2014

Location: Sunset Point, Presque Isle S.P.

Date: November 1, 2014
Time: 0755-0955
Weather: Cloudy, NE wind steady at 20 mph with wind gusts to 35 mph.  Light rain showers, temp. 40 F, waves five to six feet.
Comments: Viewing conditions were difficult with the strong wind and rain blowing in your face and heavily overcast skies. It was hard keeping the objective lens dry and with the misty atmosphere, long distance identifications were impossible. There was a good movement of Northern Pintail and Green-winged Teal with other puddle ducks among them that may have been wigeon or Gadwall.  There were also a few Dunlin on the move.  Most birds were moving west.  A Red-necked Grebe passed the watch heading west.

Date: November 2, 2014
Time: 0650-0920
Weather: Variably cloudy, NW wind to  20 mph, temp. 34 F, waves five to six feet falling to less than four feet.
Comments: There was a light movement of Red-breasted Merganser, most of which were moving east.  Highlights this morning include an unidentified female eider and a Red Phalarope.  The eider flew in from the east at about 200 to 300 yards offshore at 0730, then just as it was directly out from me it landed on the water.  I saw it briefly on the water, but because of the high waves I never saw it again.  It looked grayer brown than a King should look and the auxiliaries and lesser coverts looked dingier white than I would expect on King.  It was also quite large.  However, it was backlit somewhat and I didn't have prolonged views.  The Red Phalarope appeared from the east at 0800 moving just a few yards away from the shoreline, making a few circles then landing on the water briefly before continuing west. Unfortunately for Sam Stull and Roger Donn, they didn't arrive at the watch until after those birds had passed the point.  Sam missed the phalarope by seconds.

Date: November 4, 2014
Time: 0750-0850
Weather: Mostly cloudy, S wind to 5 mph, temp. 54 F, waves two to three feet.
Comments: A slow morning as expected with the gentle warm south wind.  Red-breasted Mergansers were moving west and Horned Grebes were moving east.  There was a group of Lesser Scaup in four sizable flocks heading west at 0717 hours.   Roger Donn joined me for the last 30 minutes of the watch.

Waterbirds counted:

American Black Duck  1
Mallard  2
Greater Scaup  1

Date: November 5, 2014
Time: 0645-0915
Weather: Mostly clear, W wind to 10 mph, temp. 42 F, waves to three feet.
Comments: A few Gadwall and American Wigeon were moving east.  There were a fair number of Red-breasted Mergansers on the move, mostly to the west, but not many scaup.  A rather all small all dark duck gave me the slip, which I suspect was a female Harlequin Duck, based upon head shape and the reduced amount of white on the face, but I never got a good side profile look before it got by me.

Waterbirds counted:

Gadwall  92
American Wigeon  21
Mallard  6
Northern Shoveler  7
Green-winged Teal  3
Lesser Scaup  115

Date: November 6, 2014
Time: 0700-0900
Weather: Mostly cloudy, S wind to 10 mph, temp. 44 F, waves less than a foot.
Comments: Lesser Scaup and Red-breasted Merganser apparently roosted off Sunset Point last night, since there were many on the water at daylight.  A boat came along and put everything up and most moved west.  Other than that, there was little else.

Waterbirds counted:

Ring-necked Duck  1
Greater Scaup  1
Lesser Scaup 363
White-winged Scoter  1
Bufflehead  1

Date: November 7, 2014
Time: 0655-0855
Weather: Mostly cloudy, NW wind to 25 mph, temp. 37 F, waves four to five feet.
Comments: A rather disappointing day considering the good conditions.  Lesser Scaup and Red-breasted Merganser were moving mostly west.  Bufflehead numbers bumped up a little today, but not much else happening.

Waterbirds counted:

Gadwall  2

Date: November 9, 2014
Time: 0700-0930
Weather: Cloudy, WSW wind to 10 mph, temp. 38 F, waves about two to three feet.
Comments: Things picked up a bit today from yesterday. There was a number of Buffleheads passing the point and at 0915 there was a big west to east movement of Red-breasted Merganser when several thousand passed in about 20 minutes.  Highlight was a Short-eared Owl that came across the lake and then moved west without making landfall.  Sam Stull and Roger Donn assisted with the count.

Waterbirds counted:

Gadwall  30
American Wigeon  8
Mallard  3
Northern Shoveler  3

Date: November 10, 2014
Time: 0655-0825
Weather: Mostly cloudy, S wind to 10 mph, temp. 45 F, waves about one to two feet.
Comments: A short burst of Red-breasted Merganser with a west to east movement occurred again this morning with many staging off Sunset Point.  Horned Grebes were moving around with most going east.  Other waterfowl movement was very light.

Waterbirds counted:

American Wigeon  6
Redhead   8
Ring-necked Duck  3

Location: Sunset Point, Presque Isle S.P.
Date: November 11, 2014
Time: 0650-0820
Weather: Clear, S wind to 10 mph, temp. 55 F, waves less than a foot.
Comments: Except for a few Bufflehead and Red-breasted Mergansers moving around, there was very little as expected considering the conditions.

Waterbirds counted:

Tundra Swan  29
Gadwall  2
American Black Duck  2
Mallard  5
Lesser Scaup  20
Surf/Black scoter  1
Bufflehead  85
Red-breasted Merganser  1230

Location: Sunset Point, Presque Isle S.P.
Date: November 12, 2014
Time: 0655-0855
Weather: Cloudy, W wind to 20 mph, temp. 40 F, waves four to five feet.
Comments: Quite a drastic change in weather from yesterday, but it didn't seem to influence the waterfowl flight much.  For the first hour of daylight there was a steady light westward movement of small flocks of Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead, and Red-breasted Mergansers.  Then after 0800 hrs. there was little happening over the water.

Waterbirds counted:

Gadwall  15
Ring-necked Duck  3

Lesser Scaup  346
Surf Scoter  1
Black Scoter  1

Other bird over the lake:

Bald Eagle  1 imm.

Location: Sunset Point, Presque Isle S.P.
Date: November 13, 2014
Time: 0700-0800
Weather: Cloudy, WNW wind to 10 mph, temp. 30 F, waves three to four feet.  Moderate snow showers with 2" of snow on the ground
Comments: Because of snow showers, visibility was limited. Most birds seen were identifiable.  However a couple of all dark ducks flew west past the point not far offshore that looked suspiciously like Harlequin Ducks.  I checked the nearby breakwaters for the birds, but found nothing.

Waterbirds counted:

Lesser Scaup  98
Black Scoter  1
Surf/Black scoter  1
Bufflehead  26
Common Goldeneye  4
Hooded Merganser  3
Red-breasted Merganser  160

Location: Sunset Point,Presque Isle S.P.
Date: November 14, 2014
Time: 0650-0950
Weather: Mostly cloudy, W wind to 20 mph, temp. 30 F, waves three to four feet.  Two to three inches of snow on the ground.
Comments: Lesser Scaup and Red-breasted Mergansers were moving west in good numbers with a few Canvasbacks and Redheads mixed with the scaup.  Common Loons staged a major flight the first hour after daylight flying high in a wide band, mostly in a southerly direction.  Despite the nice movement of birds, nothing unusual were among them.

Waterbirds counted:

Gadwall  30
American Black Duck  2
Mallard  2
Northern Pintail  3

Other bird moving along the lake:
American Pipit  1
Location: Sunset Point,Presque Isle S.P.
Date: November 15, 2014
Time: 0700-0800
Weather: Cloudy, SW wind to 5 mph, temp. 27 F, waves two feet. Heavy snow showers.  Two to three inches of snow on the ground with an additional fresh counting of two inches.
Comments: Heavy snow showers starting shortly after daylight shutting down the watch early because of near zero visibility.  There was a light west movement of Lesser Scaup, Red-breasted Merganser and Horned Grebes.  Highlight was the pair of Harlequin Ducks (immature male and a female) that apparently had roosted on one of the breakwaters overnight since Adam Troyer spotted them sleeping on the rocks shortly after daylight.  Makes me wonder if it was the two dark mystery birds I saw a couple of days ago.  Adam Troyer, Adam Erb, and friend assisted me with the count.

Waterbirds counted:

Gadwall  3
American Black Duck  2
Mallard  7
Lesser Scaup  100
HARLEQUIN DUCK  2 (male and female)
Surf Scoter  2

Location: Sunset Point,Presque Isle S.P.
Date: November 16, 2014
Time: 0655-0855
Weather: Mostly cloudy, SW wind to 5 mph, temp. 27 F, waves two feet. Two to three inches of snow on the ground.
Comments: Very little movement this morning.  Sam Stull and Roger Donn assisted with the count part of the time.

Waterbirds counted:

Mallard  1
Redhead  2
Lesser Scaup  333
White-winged Scoter  1
Black Scoter  1
Long-tailed Duck  5
Bufflehead  6
Hooded Merganser  1
Red-breasted Merganser  535
Red-throated Loon  1
Common Loon 12
Horned Grebe  12

Location: Sunset Point, Presque Isle S.P.
Date: November 18, 2014
Time: 0700-0930
Weather: Cloudy, WSW wind to 35 mph, temp. 11 F, waves 6 to 8 feet near shore, with 15 foot waves far offshore. About six inches of snow on the ground.  Snow squalls most of the time with low visibility.
Comments: Large flocks of Lesser Scaup were noted moving west during brief breaks in the squalls as well as a few Red-breasted Mergansers.  The Black Scoter seen this morning flying west just offshore was likely the same bird that has been hanging around the breakwaters the last week or so.  Highlights this morning were a pair of Harlequin Ducks that flew west just offshore, likely the same birds recorded a couple of days ago and an immature Parasitic Jaeger that appeared through the veil of snow and flew within a 200 hundred yards or so from shore before turning back out into the lake, disappearing in the snow storm (very poor photos were obtained, though good enough to see that it was a jaeger).  A female Wood Duck was a surprise as it came out of the snow storm from the lake and headed inland.  A female Green-winged Teal flying with a male Common Goldeneye was an odd couple.

Waterbirds counted:

Tundra Swan  1
Wood Duck  1
Gadwall  14
Mallard  3
Green-winged Teal  1
Lesser Scaup  2050
HARLEQUIN DUCK  1 pair

Hooded Merganser  2
Red-breasted Merganser  300
Common Loon  2
PARASITIC JAEGER  1 imm.

Location: Sunset Point,Presque Isle S.P.
Date: November 19, 2014
Time: 0700-1000
Weather: Mostly clear becoming variably cloudy, SSW wind to 25 mph dropping to 15 mph later, temp. 11 to 17 F, waves 6 to 7 feet falling to 4 to 5 feet. Three inches of fresh snow on the ground from last night.
Comments: The severe winter storm that was hitting the Buffalo area continued out over the lake until at least 0800 hours.  Heavy storm clouds and whiteout conditions about a mile out on the lake.  This may have been the reason for a massive movement of waterfowl this morning, especially Red-breasted Merganser.  Except for Redheads which were mainly moving east, most ducks were moving west.  Surprisingly, I was not able to find a single Greater Scaup among the big flocks of Lesser Scaup.  Highlight was an immature male Harlequin Duck shortly after daybreak believed to be a different bird from the recent one with the female, since the flanks were fully orange and the white markings were more extensive.  It came in low along the shoreline from the east, sat briefly on the water next to a breakwater then continued flying west.

Time: 0700-1000
Weather: Cloudy, NW wind to 20 mph, temp. 20 F, waves 4 to 5 feet.  Six inches of new snow fall overnight.
Comments: Though not in huge numbers, there was a steady westward movement of waterfowl all during the count period.  Lesser Scaup and Red-breasted Merganser were about evenly split in terms of numbers of individuals.  There was a nice movement of White-winged Scoters and Long-tailed Ducks as well as Horned Grebes.  Highlights were two Red-necked Grebes and an Eared Grebe moving west.  The Eared Grebe was not far from shore.

Location: Sunset Point,Presque Isle S.P.
Date: November 23, 2014
Time: 0705-0905
Weather: Cloudy, SW wind to 10 mph, temp. 45 F, waves 1 to 2 feet. Light rain showers with only scattered patches of snow cover left on the ground.
Comments: Horned Grebes were moving in small groups mainly to the east.  There were very few ducks until a boat came across the lake putting up over 9,000 Lesser Scaup, which all moved west.  Despite the slow activity on the water, it was quite exciting to find a basic plumaged Pacific Loon sitting on the water about 1/2 mile offshore. Some poor, but identifiable images were taken.  It had a smoothly rounded head and the evenly dark gray neck was sharply demarcated in a straight line from the white front of the neck.  A diffused black line could be seen where the gray of the neck met the white of the neck.  A dark chinstrap was also easily seen.  The dark gray on the top of the head extended down and completely covered the eye.  The mantle was darker than the back of the neck.  As the bird bent its' neck forward to preen, the gray on the back of the neck became noticeably paler gray.  The bill was clearly small and the head was usually held horizontally or slightly elevated. It eventually drifted out into the lake and out of sight after about 25 minutes or so and could not be relocated.  Coincidentally, I found the first county Pacific Loon on Nov. 25 back in 1992.  Roger Donn got to see the loon, arriving seconds after I found it.
