Bird reports for March

The following birds of note were reported in March from Erie County, Pa.
 
White-winged Scoter  up to 5; channel and just east of Dobbins landing
 
Iceland Gull  1 adult; March 7; foot of East Ave.
 
An unusually high number of Great Black-backed Gulls have been present at the east end of Presque Isle Bay for the past couple of weeks, with as many as 800 estimated just a few days ago.  Most days 300 to 400 can be seen off Port Access Road or at the foot of East Avenue sitting on the ice.  This is the first time I have seen black-backed gulls out number both Ring-billed and Herring Gulls.
 
Snowy Owl  1; to at least March 3; just south of Union City along Holden Rd.

Snow Goose  2 white; March 12; hawk watch at TREC

White-winged Scoter  up to 3; through the week; east of Dobbins landing

Great Egret  1; March 13 (early); Fairview Twp.

Thayer’s Gull  3 (two adults, one 2nd or 3rd cycle); March 15; east of Dobbins landing

Iceland Gull  3 (one adult, two first cycle); March 15; east of Dobbins landing

Lesser Black-backed Gull  2 (adults); March 15; east of Dobbins landing

Glaucous Gull  6 (all ages but no adults); March 15; east of Dobbins landing

Snow Goose  150+- (at least most were white morph); March 21; flying east over West 8th St. at 10:00 AM.
                          20 (white); March 21; flying over the Stull Interpretive Center on Presque Isle S.P. around noon. 
 
White-winged Scoter  2; to at least March 18; east of Dobbins landing
 
Sandhill Crane  1; March 16; over the Presque Isle hawk watch
                          3; March 18; over the Presque Isle hawk watch
 
Herring Gull X Great Black-backed Gull  1 adult; March 18; east of Dobbins landing
 
Thayer's Gull  up to 3; to at least March 18; east of Dobbins landing
 
Iceland Gull  up to 4; through the week; east of Dobbins landing and Presque Isle Bay
 
Lesser Black-backed Gull  2; March 17; east of Dobbins landing
 
Glaucous Gull  up to 12; through the week; east of Dobbins landing and Presque Isle Bay
 
Common Raven  1; March 17; near Edinboro
                            2 with one carrying a stick; March 18; near Edinboro

Snow Goose  50 (all white); March 24; flying over Fairview Twp.
                       75; March 24; flying overhead south of Union City
                       80 (15 were blue); March 29; flying over the Presque Isle Hawk Watch at TREC
 
White-winged Scoter  up to 3; through the week near Dobbins landing
 
Black-crowned Night-Heron  at least 2; March 28; south pier
 
Turkey Vulture  3687 (record one-day high in Erie Co.); March 29; Presque Isle Hawk Watch at TREC
 
Iceland Gull  1; March 28; channel
 
Lesser Black-backed Gull  1; March 28 & 29, off Vista 1 and Perry Monument at Presque Isle S.P.
 
Glaucous Gull  up to 6; through the week; Presque Isle Bay
 
Northern Saw-whet Owl  1; March 25; pines at Presque Isle S.P.

Snow Goose  4 white; March 30; Presque Isle Hawk Watch at the TREC
                       28 white; April 1; Fairview Twp.
 
Cackling Goose  5; April 2; Presque Isle Hawk Watch at the TREC
 
Eurasian Wigeon  1 male; March 31; Edinboro Lake
 
Surf Scoter  1; April 1; Lake LeBoeuf
 
White-winged Scoter  up to 8; through the week; Presque Isle Bay and off Beach 11
 
Red-throated Loon  1; through the week; Presque Isle Bay
 
Red-necked Grebe  1; March 28; Vista 1
 
Great Egret  up to 3; April 2 to at least April 4; head of Presque Isle Bay and inland ponds on Presque Isle
 
Sandhill Crane  1; March 30; Presque Isle Hawk Watch at the TREC
 
Iceland Gull  up to 3 through the week with a high of 7 on April 4; Presque Isle Bay and area
 
Lesser Black-backed Gull  up to 2 through the week with a high of 14 on April 4; Presque Isle Bay and area
 
Glaucous Gull  up to 5; through the week; Presque Isle Bay
 
Great Black-backed Gull X Herring Gull  1 adult; April 1; Vista 1
 
Northern Saw-whet Owl  1; April 2; pines on Presque Isle S.P.
