Location for the waterbird count:  Sunset Point, Presque Isle State Park

Erie, Erie County, Pa.
Date: Sept. 12, 2014
Time: 0650-0850
Weather: Cloudy, Northeast wind to 10 mph, temp. 53 F, occasional light drizzle, waves about two to three feet.
Comments:  Canada Geese moving across the lake from Canada and small numbers of ducks and cormorants on the move.  A record early Erie County Common Loon flew past overhead.

Date:  September 14, 2014
Time:  0645-0845
Weather:  Mostly clear, wind NW to 10 mph, temp. 45 F, waves < two feet.
Comments:  Hundreds of cormorants leaving Gull Point flying north out into the lake, otherwise very little movement.

Time:  0645-0815
Weather:  Variably cloudy, light SW wind, temp. 50 F, waves < a foot.
Comments:  Almost nothing moving.  At one point I watched three Merlins trying to catch a Passerine crossing the lake.

Date: September 21, 2014
Time: 0700-0830
Weather: Cloudy, occasional heavy downpours, light SW wind, temp. 65 F
Comments: Pretty uneventful morning.

Red-breasted Merganser  1
Double-crested Cormorant  270

Other flying along the lake:
Monarch  1
Date: September 22, 2014
Time: 0700-0900
Weather: Cloudy, NW wind to 25 mph, temp. 48 F, waves four to five feet.
Comments: There was a light movement of waterfowl and a few shorebirds including a turnstone and a White-rumped Sandpiper.  First of the fall Redheads and Lesser Scaup.

Time: 0700-0830
Weather: Partly cloudy, light WSW wind, temp. 50 F, waves < foot.
Comments: Very quiet on the lake.  Roger Donn assisted with the count.

Date: September 30, 2014
Time: 0700-0830
Weather: Cloudy, temp. about 52 F, calm wind and lake until 8:20 when the wind kicked in from the west at about 10 mph ahead of an approaching storm.  Light rain showers at the end of the count. 
Comments: Very quiet on the lake with the only notable movement consisting of Double-crested Cormorants and a flock of Common Terns.  There was a sprinkling of passerines crossing the lake.  One Passerine was knocked out of the air onto the water and was eaten by a Ring-billed Gull.

Between a busy Summer schedule and my internet connection messing me up for awhile I've lagged behind on the reports.
So here is the last three months in one post. Hope to do better in the months to follow.

The following birds of note were reported July 1 - 6th from Gull Point at Presque Isle S.P., unless noted otherwise.
  • Merlin   one pair with two young; east Erie; first confirmed nest with young in the county.
  • Snowy Plover  1 adult; July 1 to at least July 4
  • Piping Plover  up to 2, one with leg bands; July 3 & 4
  • American Avocet  6; July 1  1; July 2
  • Willet  1; June 30  23 (very high count for this time of year); July 1  1; July 2 to 4
  • Whimbrel  1; July 2
  • Marbled Godwit  1; July 1
  • Ruddy Turnstone--2; June 30
  • Black Tern  1; July 2
  • Blackpoll Warbler  1 singing male; June 30 to at least July 2; Thompson Circle.  Latest on record in the county.

The following birds of note were reported July 7 - 14th from Gull Point at Presque Isle S.P.
  • Piping Plover  1 banded adult; July 8
  • American Avocet  2; July 7    3; July 8   2; July 9
  • Whimbrel  1; July 9
  • Marbled Godwit  3; July 7
  • White-rumped Sandpiper  1; July 9

The following birds of note were reported July 15 - 20th from Gull Point at Presque Isle S.P. this past week.

July 20 - 27th Except for one sighting, all bird reports of note were from Gull Point on Presque Isle S.P., Pa.

The following birds of note were reported July 28 - August 4th from Gull Point at Presque Isle S.P., Pa.

  • Least Bittern  1; July 30
  • Whimbrel  12; July 28     3; July 31    1; Aug. 1
  • Red Knot  14; July 28
  • White-rumped Sanpiper  2; July 28
Don Snyder witness a spectacular fallout of shorebirds at Gull Point on Monday, July 28 when he estimated nearly 640 shorebirds of 12 species in a four hour period between 12:30 PM and 4:30 PM.  The majority of the birds were Semipalmated Sandpipers, about 325, and Sanderling, nearly 200.  The rarest birds were noted above.

Whimbrel at Gull Point on Presque Isle S.P. was the only notable bird reported August 5 - 10th.

The following birds of note were reported August 11 - 17th from Gull Point on Presque Isle S.P., Pa.:

Three Baird's Sandpipers were at the point on August 16.  The first reported this year.

The following birds of note were reported August 18 - 24th from Gull Point on Presque Isle State Park, unless noted otherwise.
  • American Golden Plover  1; Aug. 22
  • American Avocet  6; Aug. 20
  • Willet  1; Aug. 20
  • Upland Sandpiper  1; Aug. 20
  • Stilt Sandpiper  up to 2; Aug. 20-22
  • Lesser Black-backed Gull  1; Aug. 20
  • Olive-sided Flycatcher  1; Aug. 19; State Game Lands #155

The following birds of note were reported August 31st from Gull Point on Presque Isle S.P.
  • American Golden Plover  3; Aug. 31
  • American Avocet  1; Aug. 31
  • Willet  1; Aug. 31
  • Whimbrel  2; Aug. 31
  • Marbled Godwit  1; Aug. 31
  • White-rumped Sandpiper  2; Aug. 31

The following birds of note were reported September 1 - 7th from Gull Point on Presque Isle S.P. unless noted otherwise:
  • American Golden Plover  5; Sept. 6   1; Sept. 7
  • American Avocet  2; Sept. 7
  • Whimbrel  1; Sept. 2
  • Hudsonian Godwit  1; Sept. 2
  • Stilt Sandpiper  1; Sept. 7
  • White-eyed Vireo  1; Sept. 3; Presque Isle
  • Yellow-throated Vireo  1; Sept. 4; along French Creek north of the Union City Dam

The following birds of note were reported September 8th - 14th in Erie County, Pa.
  • Buff-breasted Sandpiper  1; Sept. 11; Gull Point, Presque Isle S.P.
  • Eastern Whip-poor-will  1 heard calling; Sept. 8; pines, Presque Isle S.P.
  • Connecticut Warbler  1; Sept. 9; State Game Lands #191
There was a nice fallout of Passerines the last couple of days with 40 to 50 Swainson's Thrushes reported from Presque Isle S.P. and several species of warblers including Cape May Warblers.  Today there were several Philadelphia Vireos present on Presque Isle S.P.

The following birds of note were reported from Presque Isle S.P. September 15th - 21st
  • Red Phalarope  2; Sept. 14; Gull Point
  • White-eyed Vireo  1; Sept. 15; Pine Tree Trail

The birds of note were reported September 22 - 28th.
  • American Golden Plover  2; Sept. 23; Gull Point
  • Buff-breasted Sandpiper  1; Sept. 23; Gull Point
  • Pine Siskin--16; Sept. 28; Erie bay side.  Earliest sighting on record in the county by at least two weeks.
