The following birds of note were reported from Feb. 17 to 23, 2014 from the channel at Presque Isle S.P. unless noted otherwise.
  • Red-throated Loon  1; Feb. 21;  First February record in Erie County
  • Surf Scoter  up to 2; through the week
  • White-winged Scoter  up to 20; through the week
  • Long-tailed Duck  up to 4; through the week
  • Iceland Gull  1; periodically through the week at the channel and Lake View Landfill
  • Lesser Black-backed Gull  1; periodically through the week
  • Glaucous Gull  up to 4; periodically through the week at the Lake View Landfill and 1 or 2 at the channel
  • Snowy Owl  1 with radio transmitter; to at least Feb. 17; off the foot of East Ave.
  • Northern Shrike  1; Feb. 19; Gull Point Trail 
  • Lapland Longspur  1; Feb. 19; Gull Point

Surf Scoter and White-winged Scoter by Michele Franz
The first photo is a long-tailed duck while the second has a surf-scoter in the foreground and a white-winged scoter behind heading right, note the white comma behind his eye.
The following birds of note were reported this week from Presque Isle S.P. Erie County, Pa. unless noted otherwise.
  • Red-necked Grebe 1; Feb. 12; channel
  • Surf Scoter 1; all week; channel
  • White-winged Scoter 43 (maximum single day count this week); channel
  • Long-tailed Duck 5; all week, channel and Horseshoe Pond
  • Thayer's Gull 1; Feb. 11; Lake View Landfill
  • Iceland Gull 1; through the week; Lake View Landfill
  • Lesser Black-backed Gull 1; Feb. 11 & 15; Lake View Landfill & channel
  • Glaucous Gull up to 4; all week; Lake View Landfill & channel
  • Snowy Owl 1; Feb. 10 to at least 13; Girard Twp.,   2;  Feb. 10; Erie 1 with radio transmitter; all week; Erie International Airport and Presque Isle Bay
  • Long-eared Owl 1 road killed; Feb. 11; Erie
  • Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 1; all week; Erie
  • Northern Shrike 1; Feb. 12; Franklin Center  1; Feb. 15; Fairview Business Park
  • Common Raven 1; all week; Lake View Landfill

The following birds of note were reported this week from Erie County.
  • Surf Scoter  1; Feb. 9; channel
  • White-winged Scoter  up to 24; through the week, channel
  • Long-tailed Duck  up to 4; through the week; channel
  • Thayer's Gull  1 adult; Feb. 3 & 4; Lake View Landfill
  • Iceland Gull  up to 4; through the week; Lake View Landfill
  • Lesser Black-backed Gull  up to 2 adults; Feb. 3 & 4;  Lake View Landfill and channel 
  • Glaucous Gull  up to 8; all week; Lake View Landfill 
  • Apparent Herring X Glaucous Gull  1 first cycle; Feb. 3; Lake View Landfill 
  • Snowy Owl  1; Feb. 4; Millcreek Twp. 
  • Yellow-bellied Sapsucker  1 imm.; through the week; Erie; coming to a suet feeder 
  • Common Raven  1 or 2; at least twice this past week; Lake View Landfill 
  • Light and dark morph Rough-legged Hawks were also occasionally present at the Lake View Landfill this past week.
